A West Fort Worth homeowner is cautious of a rip-off that almost values her hundreds of greenbacks and stole her peace of mind. Three guys claiming to be roofers pushed their manner into her residence and then scared her into paying up.
“Everybody that knows me constantly says how tough I am,” stated Dallas Kirbie-Tucker. “I can contend with myself.” Kirbie-Tucker had continually felt secure underneath her roof, even when she needed to update it after hurricane harm over 12 months. But a knock on her door this week changed all that. Three guys drove in, breaking the lock on the storm door. “I’m backing up because he is coming at me, ‘Hi, do you consider me? I roofed your private home,’ and I’m wondering no,” Kirbie-Tucker stated. They claimed the roof wished a patch.
“And it’s going to value you about $148,” she stated. The guys walked immediately to the front bedroom and sent Kirbie-Tucker for a flashlight. When she returned, there was clear water streaming down the wall.
“Like they’d sprayed water up at the wall and let it come down,” she said. The guys would not permit her to move outdoors to see them working. “And all of a sudden, I’m questioning, oh my, oh my, this is a scam,” Kirbie-Tucker said. Then they instructed her they wanted $2,500 coins. She attempted to argue.
“I began to get up, and he positioned his hand on my shoulder right here and pushed me to go into reverse within the chair, and he said you might write the test.” Finally, to get them out of the house, she called her financial institution to cancel and look at them as soon as they left, then called the police. “All I should consider is God does not let them harm me. God doesn’t allow them to kill me. God protect me due to the fact, I’m telling you currently, I changed into terrified,” Kirbie-Tucker stated. She’s left feeling embarrassed and shaken. However, she decided to prevent the following scam.
“People my age and older need to recognize no longer to open the door because that is all I did wrong,” Kirbie-Tucker stated. “I simply opened the door.” Imagine you’re standing on the sidewalk, looking at an average house. You see the siding, the windows, the front door, and way up above, you see the roof. Does the top have asphalt shingles? Wood shakes, perhaps? Maybe it’s made of metal or rubber tiles? What you see is where the focus goes, but what you don’t see matters. There’s more to roofing than meets the eye. So, let’s talk about what goes on under the shingles.
The Roof Deck
We learn to crawl before we walk, so when talking about roofing, let’s start with square one: the surface area of your roof, which is made of wood. Your wood roof deck is comparable to an automobile’s metal body. It is installed on top of the basic house frame to give a surface area to install Shingles. Without a roof deck installed on your house, there would be nowhere to install your Shingles. And, of course, without the shingles, your roof deck would rot away due to exposure to the sun, rain, snow, ice, etc. It’s not a comfortable home!
On Newer Houses, sheets of plywood or OSB boards are fastened on top of wooden trusses in your attic to form the roof deck. Plywood or OSB boards are installed in a staggered formation with small spaces between them to allow the wood to expand and contract as the wood heats in the summer and cools in the winter. Older homes often have 2″ x 6″ lengths installed instead of plywood or OSB board.
